UPDATE
I have just heard the episode below called “Philosophy for Theology”. While having listened to quite a few Grace in Common episodes so far (and happily shared them), I must say that I was rather sobered (indeed estranged) by the fact that an hour and eight minutes could be spent in this particular episode discussing such a subject without a mention of Herman Dooyeweerd. I should say that I have been listening to episodes randomly rather than sequentially, so I can only imagine that Dooyeweerd has been “dismissed” in an earlier show. Most awesomely for me, however, was that at the end of the podcast young academic Christians are simply recommended to go read Plato (and by default Aristotle), or Nietzsche, or Heidegger, or Foucault etc. Theology can thus apparently use philosophy like a toolbox, blithely lifting a philosophic wrench in ad hoc fashion to see if it fits a specific issue, dropping it and rummaging for another if it doesn’t. To listen to the episode, go here —
PHILOSOPHY FOR THEOLOGY?
In this episode we ask how should theologians use philosophy.

On a personal note, the above is of particular concern to me because Dooyeweerd’s writings have profoundly changed my own life. So I think I will just take the opportunity here to add some direct links to his work.
Online versions of Dooyeweerd’s NEW CRITIQUE —
DE WIJSBEGEERTE DER WETSIDEE
DUTCH (1935)
A NEW CRITIQUE OF THEORETICAL THOUGHT
ENGLISH (1953, expanding on the earlier Dutch version)
Please note also that free PDF downloads of most of Dooyeweerd’s books are available HERE
I would draw attention particularly to the following books as suggested starters (in whatever order). NOTE that clicking the link will immediately activate a (free) direct pdf download of the title —
ROOTS OF WESTERN CULTURE (256 pages)
